How to get agency or reseller status on ad platforms

Status is not a badge you apply for, it is a commercial relationship with obligations attached. Here is what platforms actually require, and when the answer is that you do not need it yet.

Short answer

Agency and reseller status on advertising platforms is a commercial agreement granting rights to manage client accounts, open and fund them through the channel, and access partner support. Requirements typically include verified business registration, demonstrated spend or client volume, and compliance capability. It carries obligations including spend commitments and adherence to platform policy.

What status actually gives you

Four things, and it is worth being precise about them: the ability to create and manage client accounts under your own entity, channel-level account limits rather than self-serve card ceilings, entry to partner support lines and policy escalation, and a defined commercial agreement with the partner above you.

What it does not give you is immunity. Partner status does not exempt accounts from policy, and platforms withdraw status from partners whose client accounts repeatedly fail review.

What platforms typically require

Verified business entity. Registration documents matching the applying entity, and a track record rather than a same-week incorporation in most cases.

Demonstrated volume or client base. The most variable requirement. Some routes need existing managed spend; others accept a credible pipeline and commitment.

Platform certification. Individual certification for staff managing accounts, and product knowledge evidence.

Compliance capability. A documented process for verification, policy review and issue handling. This is assessed more often than agencies expect.

Commercial commitment. Spend commitments or minimum volume are normal, and they are the reason status is not free.

The honest trade-offs

Status converts flexibility into commitment. Spend commitments apply whether or not your clients spend. Compliance obligations extend to every account you manage, so onboarding a difficult client becomes a risk to your own standing. And administrative overhead is real: verification, documentation and platform reviews are ongoing work.

For agencies below a certain scale, the obligations outweigh the benefits. That is not a failure, it is arithmetic.

Three routes to platform access

1. Direct status. Apply to the platform. Best economics and full control if you qualify; longest timeline and the highest bar.

2. Through a channel partner. Operate under an existing partner’s agreement, with account opening, pricing and escalation included. Fastest route to real capability, and you keep client relationships. The trade-offs are a layer in the commercial chain and dependence on the partner’s standing.

3. Reseller arrangements. Sell platform access under someone else’s agreement, generally with less control and often less favourable economics than route two.

Many agencies start at two and move to one once volume justifies it. That progression is normal and worth planning for rather than treating as a step down.

Timelines, realistically

Applying directly, expect a process measured in weeks to months, with the variable being documentation completeness and whether you meet the platform’s volume expectations on first review.

Through a channel partner, eligibility can usually be established in days, because the partner already holds the agreement and is evaluating you commercially rather than the platform evaluating you administratively.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a minimum number of clients to get agency status?+

Platforms assess commercial substance rather than a fixed client count, but a demonstrated client base or managed spend is expected. The specific threshold varies by platform, market and route, which is why stating a single universal number is misleading.

Can I get reseller status without meeting platform requirements directly?+

Yes, by operating under an existing channel partner agreement. You gain account opening, higher account ceilings and escalation capability without meeting the platform’s direct partner criteria, with a commercial layer in between.

Does agency status mean better ad performance?+

No. Status affects account access, pricing and escalation, not campaign outcomes. Media performance depends on strategy, creative, targeting and measurement, which remain the agency’s responsibility.

What happens if my agency loses partner status?+

Client accounts should be structured so they survive it. If each client owns their advertiser account with their own billing and data, status loss affects your ability to open new accounts and your pricing tier, not your clients’ existing accounts and history.
